Disney has hyped this Disney Channel original movie up so much over the past couple of months, I think the actual release of the movie was bound to be a let-down. My nine-year-old daughter was so excited to see her favorite stars Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato together in a movie. Although the acting is decent, the plot is a bit confusing and strange. Princess Rosalinda Maria Montoya Fiore (Demi Lovato), from the small country of Costa Luna, is about to become queen. In the middle of rehearsing for the actual ceremony, Magnus Kane (Johnny Ray Rodriguez) comes out with a sword and seizes the power of the crown away. Princess Rosalinda, along with the Queen Mother and the staff, are held prisoner. The royalties around the world have set up a program in case of such a problem called the "Princess Protection Program." Princess Rosalinda is rescued and taken to live in an unassuming Louisiana town, where she will room with Carter Mason (Selena Gomez) and pretend to be a regular person. There are quite a few sticky situations between the girls, but they eventually become friends. Rosalinda (known as Rosie in the "real world") learns how to function without the trappings of being a princess, and Carter learns more about how to find the princess inside herself. Princess Protection Program really shines as a movie about friendship. The adventure/drama portions-not so much. I think Disney does best when it sticks to the tried-and-true formulas that appeal to its target audience rather than trying to make things too complicated. Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez are excellent actors with great singing voices. The two play off of each other well and make the comic sequences appealing. The special features are fairly standard, and any loyal Disney Channel watchers will have already seen some of them between regular programming, especially the real-life friendship sequences between Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato. Overall, Princess Protection Program is a pleasant show, but nothing overly spectacular. Young girls, especially fans of Gomez and Lovato, will enjoy the DVD, and that's who it's made for anyway. |
